The City Council voted to crack down on dog owners who have failed to get a license for their animals. It is estimated that only about a third - approx. 120,000 - of the city's 350,000 dogs are licensed. Dog licenses cost $15 a year.
All dogs over 4 months must be spayed or neutered (special costly permits are needed to license and keep intact dogs) and be up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. Low income senior citizens (age 62 and older) and low income disabled residents qualify for one free dog license a year. Licensing fees support the city's spay and neuter programs. The advantages of licensing your dog is a better chance of finding a pet that gets lost. Each license comes with a unique number that would help reunite a lost dog with its owner.
